Faculty Portrait I run around behind and look out of the picture, trying to remember how hard it was to be wise all the time. Then I dodge before the camera can make its decision: who belongs where. That blank by the flowerpot, thats where I huddled before I got tenure, and after that it was too funny to stand. Some of us quit so we could laugh without shaking down the hall. They thought a dean, or maybe a president, could make the tide stop. Those pained expressions are the ones who believed for so long that their faces got real. Its cold, you know, up there at a lectern staring at your notes, trying to keep from laughing.
