Diego Marcial Rios, Artist | ||
"Cutting
aggressively and confidently into blocks of wood to make his gnarled, vivid pictures and
commentaries, Rios is using a medieval technique returned to favor during the past decade
and appreciated for its expressive qualities. As it happens, he also conjures much
medieval imagery and symbolism -- some of it familiar, some utterly fantastic," says
Ann Jarmusch of the San Diego Tribune. With what has been called "the unsettling visionary quality of his imagery," Rios documents his vision of contemporary life in America and feels art can be society's harshest critic and a catalyst to action. A "social commentary artist," Rios explores subjects such as political struggle, racism, social crises, religion, and militarism. Rios studied at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin, where he earned degrees in education and art. His work has been shown in more than 100 exhibitions thoughout the United States and in Japan. |
